Key Facts
Point Details
What it is 20-character global ISO 17442 code identifying the legal entity
Issued by (India) Legal Entity Identifier India Ltd (LEIL), a CCIL subsidiary
Cost Approx. ₹7,080 new • ₹4,130 renewal (incl. GST)
Validity 1 year — must be renewed annually
Processing time About 7–10 working days
Important: A lapsed LEI is treated as no LEI. Banks can block large-value RTGS/NEFT and refuse new or renewed credit if the LEI has expired. Calendar the renewal date like a hard compliance deadline.
04
What Goes Wrong Without (or With a Lapsed) LEI
No new / renewed credit
Banks cannot sanction or enhance loans for borrowers above ₹5 crore without a valid LEI.
Large payments blocked
RTGS / NEFT of ₹50 crore and above will not process without LEI of both parties.
Cross-border disruption
FEMA transactions of ₹50 crore and above need a recorded LEI.
Market participation barred
A lapsed LEI is invalid for regulated-market activity.
