Process & Timelines
Step Details
Minimum persons 2 — settlor + trustee
Registering authority Sub-Registrar Office (jurisdiction of office)
Stamp duty State-specific — varies on corpus / property value
Registration fee Typically ₹1,000–₹5,000 (state-specific)
Processing time 7–15 days for registered deed
Next steps PAN → Bank account → 12A & 80G with Income Tax Dept.
Note: For tax exemption, apply for 12A and 80G after registration. The trust deed objects must be clearly charitable and include a non-profit and dissolution clause.
03
What Goes Wrong Without Proper Registration
No legal standing
An unregistered trust cannot open a bank account, hold property, or receive grants.
12A / 80G rejected
Vague objects or missing dissolution clause leads to rejection of tax exemption.
Donations not deductible
Without 80G, donors get no tax benefit — much harder to raise funds.
Charitable status lost
If trustees are also beneficiaries, charitable status is disqualified.
