WEP Knowledge Portal: A Free Government Resource Every Woman Entrepreneur Should Know: By CA Durganjali Balusu

Homemakers with a good product idea, working professionals who want to go independent, daughters taking over a family business. Most of them have the talent. What they lack is clear, reliable information in one place.

That is exactly the gap the Government of India's Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP), and especially its Knowledge Portal, is trying to fill.

What is WEP?

WEP (wep.gov.in) is an initiative of NITI Aayog. It is a single online platform that brings together women from across India and connects them with the information, programmes and partners they need to start and grow a business.

There is a proud Hyderabad connection here. The idea was announced at the end of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit held in our own city in 2017. The platform was launched soon after, on International Women's Day, with industry bodies and organisations such as NASSCOM, CII, FICCI and SIDBI coming on board as partners.

The three "Shaktis" behind WEP

WEP is built on three simple ideas:

  1. Ichha Shakti (willpower): motivating women to take the first step and start an enterprise.
  2. Gyaan Shakti (knowledge): giving women the knowledge and ecosystem support they need to run a business well.
  3. Karma Shakti (action): hands-on support for setting up and scaling a business.

The Knowledge Portal is Gyaan Shakti in action. It is the learning side of WEP.

What you can find on the Knowledge Portal

The Knowledge Portal is designed as a one-stop learning space for women at every stage of business. Broadly, it helps with:

  • Government and private schemes: information on schemes, grants and support programmes meant for women entrepreneurs, collected in one place instead of scattered across many websites.
  • Learning resources: courses, webinars and programmes on business management and entrepreneurship.
  • Practical guidance: articles, checklists and best practices on topics like business planning, compliance and reaching the market.
  • Funding awareness: understanding the different ways to fund a business, such as loans, equity and grants, through WEP's partners.
  • Incubation and mentorship links: for women with early-stage businesses who want to grow faster.

Tip: The portal is updated from time to time, so explore the current menu on the website directly.

Who should use it?

WEP content is designed for women at different stages:

  • Aspiring entrepreneurs: women aged 18 and above who have an idea but haven't started yet. Example: Lakshmi makes excellent pickles at home and wants to sell them under her own brand.
  • Early-stage entrepreneurs: women who have started but are still finding their footing. Example: Swathi runs a small boutique and wants to understand GST and digital payments.
  • Growing businesses: women ready to scale up. Example: Padma runs a food processing unit and wants a bank loan to buy new machinery.

Each of them will find something useful. For Lakshmi, it's awareness. For Swathi, it's learning. For Padma, it's linkages to finance and mentors.

Schemes women entrepreneurs often ask about

While exploring WEP, you will come across schemes like these. Here is a quick idea:

  • PM Mudra Yojana (PMMY): collateral-free loans for small businesses.
  • Shishu: up to ₹50,000
  • Kishore: ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh
  • Tarun: ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh
  • Tarun Plus: ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh, for those who have successfully repaid an earlier Tarun loan
  • Stand-Up India: loans from ₹10 lakh to ₹1 crore for women (and SC/ST entrepreneurs) setting up a new (greenfield) enterprise in manufacturing, services, trading or activities allied to agriculture.
  • Udyam Registration: free MSME registration that opens the door to many government benefits.

Always check the latest eligibility and terms on the official scheme website or with your bank before applying.

How to get started

  1. Visit wep.gov.in and explore the Knowledge Portal section.
  2. Register on the platform to access services and programmes.
  3. Go through the resources that match your stage: starting, running or growing.
  4. Note down the schemes that look relevant to you.
  5. Then take professional guidance to check eligibility and complete the paperwork correctly.

Where a CA can help

WEP gives you awareness. Turning awareness into a running, compliant business needs proper groundwork, and that is where a Chartered Accountant comes in:

  • Choosing the right business structure: proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company
  • Udyam, GST and other registrations
  • Project reports and financial projections for loan applications
  • Bookkeeping, income tax and GST compliance
  • Understanding which schemes you are actually eligible for

A good plan at the start saves a lot of trouble later.

Final word

Many women have the skill to build a business. What often stops them is not ability but access: to information, guidance and finance. The WEP Knowledge Portal is a free, government-backed first step. Use it, learn from it, and when you're ready to act, get the right professional support.

Your business idea deserves a chance. Start today!
